Hurricane Ike
Ray Nagin is keeping people out of New Orleans until Thursday for lack of power. But power is building in what might be the next reason the citizens of New Orleans have to move back out again next week. Now a topical storm with winds just under hurricane force, Ike is expceted to be a category one hurricane on Thursday with a very good chance of entering the Gult early next week. And then who knows?
While all the news is on Hanna as she crawls slowly towards the Florida-Georgia border, Ike is building in the Atlantic.
Africa is turning out the hurricanes with some impressive speed this year. Josephine is right behind Ike. And, we will probably see Hurricane or Tropical Storm Kyle and Laura. So if you are planning a trip to the Caribbean between now and October, you should be reconsidering especially if the trip is to the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos or involves a stop in San Juan.
Historically speaking, the west Caribbean and southern Caribbean islands see less hurricanes. That’s especially true in 2008, as all of the hurricanes are going to the North. If you have a trip to St. Lucia, the Grenadines, Curaco or Aruba, you probably will be fine. The Northeastern islands, like Virgin Islands, St. Martin/Anguilla/Saba/St. Barts, could be in trouble but look to be clear.
Hurricane season officially ends on October 31 so we are now in the heart of the activity. Ike is the ninth tropical depression and while it’s not certain that it will enter the Gulf, it has a 50-50 chance based on current indicators. Then again, depending upon high pressure readings early next week, it could be a mjor problem for Florida.
The bottom line is the hurricanes will get as much air time as the presidential election over the enxt few weeks- and that is saying a lot!
