For our next holiday we’re planning to travel by car from New Orleans to Boston. On the road we would visit the major cities. Is it possible to do in three weeks?

Maybe – you will need to decide what you want to see, and stick to a schedule. I am not sure what nationality you are, but in the US there are usually great distances to cover. Many European tourists err in underestimating distances when in the US – it’s a pretty big place. There is that cliched saying that you can drive for several hours in Europe and be in another country; you can drive the same distance in the US ….and still be in the same state.
That said, New Orleans is a great town, as is Boston – you will likely get a good tour of the US South (try the barbeque, each area does it differently – the portions are huge, you can share) and a bit of the easterly cities. But you won’t be able to see everything in just 3 weeks. I would start studying the tour guides to determine what your group HAS to see and make a list. I have attached a link to the tourism sites of all 50 states to get you started. I also linked you to a TV show that explored the food in the New Orleans/Mississippi River area to guide you.
Try to see Nashville and Graceland if you are in Tennessee!
