If you are going to Essence Musical Festival. I would suggest this:

Unless you have already purchased your $80 tickets, don’t worry about it, go to the box office and purchase he cheapest tickets they have right now.

Don’t worry about being in the nose bleed section, most people walk around in the “Super Lounges” Mini concerts. Much better access to the artists and less congestion.

Attend the Daytime seminars, They are FREE. You can meet and greet some great stars, just check out and see who will be there.

Try local food on a budget:

Sure you can’t eat at Commander’s Palace, but you can eat at Copeland’s, and personally, the food is bigger and better.

Check out the Zoo (It’s not boring at all), and Audubon Park while there. Aquarium, Harrah’s casino(the food is great). Well, since you have an 18 y/o with you, go to Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner, or Boomtown Casino on the Westbank, and try the food.

There is the Lakefront. grab some seafood and head there for a daytime outing. Great views on the River.

Then always tour the French Quarter and the French Market for some shopping, and Cafe Du Monde for beignets and coffee.

I’ve lived in New Orleans all of my life and while that may sound beneficial to the cause, it’s really not, since it’s all old to me. I will say this though…

1.) Bourbon Street is a must, in the evening or at night. During the day it’s not much more than just another street (other than some of the interesting voodoo shops).

2.) I would imagine for someone not from here that the River Walk would be an interesting thing to see, maybe even a river boat (paddle boat) ride.

I’ve never really been that impressed with the ghost tours and stuff like that. New Orleans has plenty to see, but as a local it’s hard to name off the top 5 really.

If your friend is really hard up on going to the zoo, it’d probably be just as wise to get the whole package. Audobon offers a Zoo/Aquarium/IMax (3D) package that includes a river boat ride across the Mississippi.

This question is hard to answer properly not having any idea who you are or what your interests are. Just some ideas though.
