What transportation options are there from New Orleans airport to the east side of New Orleans?
Hi:
I am flying into New Orleans airport on a Saturday morning and flying back out the following Saturday morning. I am going to be volunteering at the Greater New Orleans Recovery Week. The medical clinic I need to get to is on Read Boulevard, which from what I understand is on the east side of the city. I called New Orleans Airport Shuttle and they told me that they do not go out that far. They said I would have to take a cab. I really do not want to spend that much for a round trip to/from the airport. Does anyone have any other ideas? I am looking into public transportation (the bus), but it would be nice to hear from someone familiar with the area. I am going to try calling the bus company to see if any routes go to where I need to go. Anyone have any other ideas? Or does anyone know what buses I would need to get on to get from the airport to Read Boulevard (I believe it is 5501 Read Boulevard)?

Your safest bet is a taxi cab. I think public transportation is really limited there because of money issues.

Unfortunately, I’m thinking your best shot would be to contact someone from the program you are attending. They may be able to arrange for you to catch a ride or share a cab.
Public transportation was never great before the storm and I can only imagine it being very sporadic, if existent, to that area now. There are VERY few people living in New Orleans East. Frankly, anything besides the streetcars was too dangerous to me. You can find the routes on the new orleans regional transit authority’s website, norta com. But, ugh, I just checked and the only route that came close, the Lake Forest Express, dumps you off 1/2 a mile from the clinic. And walking out there in N.O. East is very, very, very dangerous right now. Don’t do that.
If you need to take a cab on your own, then taking a hotel shuttle to downtown first may save a few bucks. I think there are special fees that apply to a taxi leaving directly from the airport, which you would be able to avoid.

When I went there last year, I got in after the shuttles were finished for the day. There is a posting on the wall by the baggage check that give the cab fares to different city destinations. It ranged from $28 to $45 one way depending on distance. Just ask at the little booth what the fare will be, and be sure to agree with the cab driver before you get in.

as for your question, we do have alot of busses around the new orleans area back now so you should be able to find one to where you are going from the airport.
