How do YOU view the holiday of Mardi Gras?

I live about 45 minutes away from New Orleans so my town definitely celebrates Mardi Gras. We have parades and tableaus annually.
I was just wondering, how does the rest of the world view and feel about Mardi Gras? Opinion question, ofcourse.

I see it as lots of fun, a catharsis. But having said that, I will probably never visit NO on Mardi Gras cause it’s too over the top for me. I love NO and visit when I can, but not at that time of the year

A big party that has a lot of music, food, and booze. In the US it is largely celebrated in New Orleans, and it is total chaos. People get drunk out of their minds, girls flash their boobs for beads, and pick pockets rip people off. That’s pretty much how its represented to the rest of the country.

well, Mardis gras is really fun! it used to be a really great time for me… my grandpa was a high ranking police and doctor and he always had a big part in mardis gras. I went once and it was fun! but every year he will send us buckets full of beads! but it is kind of a sad time now… since he died.

Total Stupidity. All there is to it is people getting drunk and screaming for cheap junk. For the non parade goers everything is closed, even Wal Mart when it isnt even closed for Thanksgiving. Its a waste of time people die and get killed all over nothing.

Metal has no idea what she is talking about. A lot of things are open, they make money today, especially on the parade route. Im going to Metairie parades in a few hours.
