Where is the best area to stay in New Orleans for Mardi Gras 2008?

Me and a buddy are heading to Mardi Gras 2008 (Sat 2/2 to Wed 2/6) and we’d like to maximize our fun (parades, drinking, partying, music, etc…) while hopefully keeping things in walking distance. Is it best to stay in French Quarter or just outside of it?

This completely depends on how much you’re willing to spend.

If you want to stay in the middle of the partying scene, you’ll want to be in the French Quarter. Lowest price right now I could find for your dates is the Iberville Suites for $211/night. There are other hotels available for higher rates, but you should book asap as they will fill up.

A somewhat cheaper option would be to stay in the downtown (CBD) area, or over by the convention center. The Courtyard by the convention center is $149/night right now. It’s about a 5 block walk to the quarter, and another 4 blocks to Bourbon St. Most anyplace in the CBD or warehouse district is within walking distance.

Here are some other tips based on my past experience:
    - get in line for the bathrooms before you need to go
    - carry extra emergency cans of beer in a backpack
    - cut down to Royal street, or up to Dauphine street if you want to go someplace on Bourbon St that is more than a couple blocks away, you will save time.
    - most importantly be patient with the crowds and have fun!

French Quarter, and Central Business District area, if you can book lodging.

It’s best to stay where the action is if you ask me. You may have a hard time finding lodging this late in the game though.

Hmmm. Either way is ok. Look for the cheaper price. That being said, staying in the French Quarter may actually be safer during Mardi Gra. I hope to see you hear during that time.
